My uncle and I visiting the refugee camp that was located in the back of a Malaysian Catholic Church. We had stayed there for two months back in 1980. Originally, we left Vietnam as one of the boat people and arrived in Malaysia as a refugee. When we got to Malaysia, the Malaysian authorities put us in one of the many island refugee camps. Once our immigrant application was accepted by the United States of America, we were transferred to St Francis which was located on the Malaysian mainland. We stayed at the church for two months readying ourselves for the new life in America. There we were given medical tests, documented, and given lessons to ease our transition into American society.

On day 1, participants arrived on campus around 2pm to register and they proceeded straight onto the conference that MYECC has prepared for them. The line-up of speakers were seasoned entrepreneurs that have started their own businesses successfully, this session was to inspire and share experiences from entrepreneurs to the aspiring entrepreneurs. The session ended with a Question and Answer forum open to all participants, and we proceeded to dinner. After dinner, there was a business simulation game that was created by one of our committee. Day 1 was generally well-received, although there were some delays. Day 2 started with a warm up game to break the ice amongst team, which acted as a diversion for us to bring away their team leaders to Tesco in discreet, to let them play on their second task: Start from Scratch. Teams had to start from scratch, build a business by purchasing materials from Tesco and sell it to the committees. After finishing up, we proceeded with Zombie Apocalypse, a physical challenge involving scavenging for “items” that would make them “survive” the Apocalypse. It was a very tiring day for the participants, other than that it was very well received. The third and final day was the pitching day, participants on day 1 was given their final task, and they had to pitch a new/improved business idea to a few number of judges ranging from Venture Capitalists, Entrepreneurs as well as lecturers from University of Nottingham Malaysia Campus. The day was proceeded with prize giving ceremony and a speech from the Organizing Chairperson of MYECC, Wong Si Ching. Through the feedback form, an average score 4.5 out of 5 was rated for the event. Although there were minor errors, the committees were quick to listen and solve the problems of the participants wherever we could. MYECC will be looking forward to MYECC 2017, only even better.
